US start-ups are increasingly using Chinese AI models because they are cheaper, faster, and more effective. That was measured by the number of AI model downloads, where Alibaba's Qwen model surpassed Meta's Llama model.

But next to the technological progress, there are two other reasons for that development:

1. There is an excellent technical documentation and developer community for models like Qwen
2. Open-Source and its transparency

That's also a chance for European competitors to build on this base for an independent AI infrastructure that benefits companies and organisations in the EU.
