The Chinese Supernode boom
While the US government is still busy restricting the export of Nvidia's GPUs to China, China itself is increasingly using AI supernodes. The clusters consist of Huawei (Ascend) or Alibaba (Panjiu) GPUs. In single-core performance, they lag behind their Western counterparts. Still, the clever integration of every layer (chip, memory, networking, power, cooling) makes these GPU clusters very competitive with Nvidia AI centers.
In combination with the variety of Chinese open-source models, which are often optimized to work on lower resources, you have a worldwide-leading AI infrastructure. The EU should take a close look at this Chinese progress, because it could open an opportunity, at least software-wise, to become more independent of US big tech companies.
